Hope, however, is intertwined with frustration. A successful assessment back in July proved Navaya’s quality, yet the promised signature remains elusive. Despite a substantial offer on the table, the 28-year-old marksman has been reluctant to commit, his focus seemingly on concluding the current campaign on home soil.

This geographical divide is at the heart of the stalemate. While South Africa's season nears its end, Zimbabwe's football calendar, which runs from March to December, still has seven crucial games remaining. For now, Navaya's goals belong to another league, and Durban City’s efforts to secure them have, so far, been in vain.

With the transfer window poised to slam shut in a mere ten days, chairman Farook Kadodia finds himself in a frantic battle to persuade Zimbabwean goal machine Washington Navaya to reconsider his priorities. The urgency was palpable in his words to FARPost: “We want him to join us now. The window closes soon, but we are still hoping.”

The object of their desire is no mere prospect; Navaya is currently a front-runner for Zimbabwe's Golden Boot, having netted 13 times in 27 appearances for TelOne FC. Yet, as the clock ticks down, Durban City are prudently weaving a contingency plan into their strategy.

Their gaze has also shifted towards Kaizer Chiefs' Tashreeq Morris, with the club keen on securing the lanky striker on a season-long loan. A decision from Chiefs is still pending, but his acquisition would offer a crucial reinforcement for the entire campaign. Morris has found himself marginalized at Chiefs following a significant overhaul of their attacking line, which saw the arrival of a trio of new forwards: Flavio Silva, Etiosa Ighodaro, and Khanyisa Mayo.
