Republic of Ireland ease to victory over Israel | OneFootball

There was plenty said about the Republic of Ireland's game against Israel which was eventually held in Hungary tonight but perhaps one of the forgotten things will be an easy win for Heimir Hallgrimsson's side.

The game very nearly didn't go ahead and many places in Ireland boycotted this match. What they won't have seen is the pre-game in which neither team shook hands with the Irish team, who wore black armbands for this game, poignantly bowing their heads during the Israeli national anthem.

When the game did eventually get underway, Ireland were by far the better side and took the lead inside the 13th minute through Troy Parrott who converted James Abankwah's cutback.

Three minutes later, it was 2-0. A superb throughball from Jack Moylan freed up Adam Idah to lift the ball over Daniel Peretz.

Moylan swapped from provider to goalscorer when he latched onto a loose ball with just under 25 minutes gone, drove forward and finished well. The Cardiff City man then made sure to point to his black arm band as he celebrated.

From that point on the result was pretty much assured and Israel never really looked like getting into the contest. Indeed, it was the kind of performance that Hallgrimsson will be hoping his team can carry forward to the next game against Austria.

Both sides stayed apart at the full-time whistle and while the game did eventually go ahead, perhaps now more questions will be asked as to why exactly Israel are still able to compete in UEFA competitions at all.
