Stije Resink addressed links to Benfica after Groningen’s latest match, saying his ankle problem made for a frustrating exit. He noted the knock could complicate any potential move.

He was prominent against Fortuna Sittard but left with ankle pain after stepping on studs in the first half, attempting to continue before being withdrawn. According to Glorioso 1904, the 22-year-old said no concrete offer has reached Groningen and he will wait to see how things develop.

Resink said he tried to stay focused amid the speculation and will see what direction things take.

He explained he felt the ankle begin to swell soon after the incident and wanted to play on until it became impossible. He added that he has spoken with his agent, with any contact handled by him and the clubs, and insisted he did not come off for nothing.

Head coach Dick Lukkien described Resink as very important for Groningen and said they were disappointed he had to go off, adding that the rest will be seen.
