Also in the United States, albeit in Kansas City, was Paxten Aaronson with the USA’s U23 Olympic squad. The 20-year-old played the full match but couldn’t prevent his side slipping to a 2-0 loss against their contemporaries from Japan in front of 21,650 spectators.

Igor Matanovic also pulled on a youth national team jersey, losing 5-2 with Croatia’s U21 team against Sweden at Stadion SRC Sesvete. The Eintracht striker, who will return to Frankfurt for the new season following a one-year loan spell at Karlsruher SC and has extended his contract until 2029, started the match and was subbed off in the 53rd minute.
