Atalanta were forced to substitute Capocannoniere Mateo Retegui just 21 minutes into the game with Empoli due to a muscular injury.
La Dea are seeking an 11th consecutive Serie A victory to keep hold of top spot, but it certainly did not start in the best way.
Empoli took the lead after 13 minutes when Lorenzo Colombo took advantage of poor defending on a throw-in.

Moments later, Italy international Retegui pulled up clutching the top of his left thigh and after a few minutes of hobbling was forced to raise the white flag.
It would seem to be a muscular injury and he therefore has to be considered at risk also for the next Serie A match against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Saturday December 28.
Although he is the top scorer in Serie A with 12 goals, he hasn’t found the net since the 3-1 win in Parma on November 23.
Retegui was replaced by Nicolò Zaniolo, who received a yellow card within 60 seconds of coming off the bench.
