As things stand, Andre Onana will return to Manchester United upon the culmination of his loan spell and hold talks with club chiefs to determine where his future lies.

The goalkeeper is spending 2025/2026 with Trabzonspor following his late summer move to Turkey.

Onana opted to make the switch abroad after accepting that if he had stayed at Old Trafford, he’d be at risk of not playing again until the end of the campaign.

Altay Bayindir had been promoted ahead of the Cameroonian in the pecking order for Premier League fixtures, with Onana’s only appearance prior to his departure coming in the second round of the Carabao Cup away to Grimsby Town.

He conceded two goals at Blundell Park before letting in 12 penalties in the shootout to confirm United’s exit. The calamitous showing was deemed the final straw for Amorim, who then instructed INEOS to pursue a new shot-stopper in the closing stages of the transfer window.

INEOS acquire young Senne Lammens as Andre Onana replacement

United subsequently sanctioned the arrival of 23-year-old Belgian Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, which paved the way for Onana to embark on a new venture elsewhere.

Lammens has yet to feature in the two games the side has played since he signed, with Bayindir occupying the space between the sticks against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Amorim has alluded to Lammens eventually becoming his No.1, so he may decide to grant the deadline-day signing his debut in Saturday’s clash with Brentford.

Onana’s United ‘chapter’ now likely ‘closed’

In the meantime, Onana remains contracted to the Reds until 2027. There is no buy option or obligation included in his agreement with Trabzonspor, meaning he’s likely to be on the hunt for a new suitor in eight months’ time.

“Officially, Andre Onana returns to Manchester United in summer 2026. My understanding is that both sides, Manchester United and Andre Onana himself, see this Manchester United chapter as almost closed,” explained Fabrizio Romano in his new YouTube video.

“It’s very difficult to imagine Andre Onana staying at Manchester United beyond season 25/26. Onana was quite disappointed with the situation this summer because Man United believe that Senne Lammens is going to be the goalkeeper for the present and future.”
