Manchester City had their club captain and star right-back Kyle Walker offered to Real Madrid recently, a new report has revealed.
The veteran England international found himself at the centre of widespread transfer rumours at the midway point of the ongoing season having indicated a desire to City officials to find a new career opportunity.
A decline in performance standards and a struggle to keep up with the ferocity of top-level English football led Walker to feel as though a change in direction was needed, and his services were unsurprisingly in-demand across the game.
Despite interest from Saudi Arabia as well as the United States, the 34-year-old was determined to maintain his place at the top of European football, and with that came an accepted proposal from Serie A giants AC Milan on loan for the rest of the season.
However, new details have since emerged revealing a new name that could have seen Walker star elsewhere in Europe, with the defender seemingly offered to the club without too much interest in return.
That is according to the information of The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana and Guillermo Rai, who reveal that Manchester City’s want-away right-back was offered to Real Madrid on a loan deal during the last January transfer window.
However, it is revealed that the La Liga giants ‘did not even respond’ to the proposal.
That month, and with no incomings expected at the Santiago Bernabeu, it is revealed that one member of Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff told The Athletic that “without a right-back, winning the Champions League is impossible”.
The latter claim would go on to prove correct with Real Madrid falling to a heavy defeat across two-legs at the quarter-final stage of the competition at the hands of Arsenal, having beaten Manchester City and Atletico Madrid to get to that stage of the competition.
For the Etihad Stadium club, they are likely to deem Walker surplus to requirements this summer even if AC Milan choose not to make their agreement with the Englishman permanent in the coming weeks.
Manchester City are believed to have a number of right-back options shortlisted ahead of approaches to be made to club’s and representatives in the next few months, with the likes of Flamengo’s Wesley and Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento among the names.
