Thomas Müller and FC Bayern – it seemed like an eternal bond. But in the summer of 2025, after a quarter of a century, their journey together came to an end. While the club no longer offered the club legend a new contract, those responsible presented Müller with an alternative that was extremely unusual and impressively shows how much they wanted to keep the 2014 world champion involved. But Müller said: „Not yet.“
Uli Hoeneß gave exciting insights behind the scenesin the latest episode of the OMR Podcast, according to which FC Bayern wanted to open the door to management wide for its long-time crowd favourite – but in an unusual way. The club had offered Müller „that we would send him around the world for a year at our expense“, Hoeneß explained.
Müller would have been able to visit top international clubs, get to know structures, make contacts and prepare for future tasks in Bayern management. A tailor-made career program – exclusively for a club legend.
But Müller didn’t feel ready for it yet. „But he told me: not yet,“ said Hoeneß. Instead of going behind the scenes, the 36-year-old opted for a new sporting challenge with the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer.

Jan-Christian Dreesen is currently managing FC Bayern München AG as a trained banker. Hoeneß expressly praises his work. And yet one wish remains: to see a true club legend at the top. The offer to Thomas Müller was an attempt in this direction – an attempt that has failed for the time being.
It remains to be seen whether Müller will return to Munich one day and join the management team after all. The club has thrown the door wide open. Now it is up to Müller to decide when he wants to walk through it.
