Revealed – Why Inter Milan Missed Out On New Fiorentina & Napoli Signings This Summer

Inter Milan had considered moves for Albert Gumdundsson and Alessandro Buongiorno this summer, but missed out.

Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, argue that this exemplifies the Nerazzurri’s transfer strategy that they’ll only make big signings to replace outgoing starters.

Inter look set to make one more signing and then end the transfer window quietly.

The Nerazzurri are on the verge of getting a deal done to sign defender Tomas Palacios.

The Argentine will arrive as a defensive reinforcement for the present, and the club hope, particularly the future.

There have been three previous signings in addition.

Inter had wrapped up agreements to sign Mehdi Taremi and Piotr Zielinski before the summer even began.

And then Josep Martinez arrived from Genoa. He is the player who Inter hope can be their next long-term goalkeeper.

Why Inter Missed Out On Gudmundsson & Buongiorno

It is not as though there were not links to more high-profile deals, however, Tuttosport notes.

Firstly, there was forward Gudmundsson.

The links between Inter and the Icelandic international had been persistent for several months.

But in the end, after a summer of uncertainty, Gudmundsson finally made the move to Fiorentina.

There are a couple of factors that prevented Inter from signing Gudmundsson.

For one thing, Tuttposport note, there is the ongoing sexual assault case against the 27-year-old in his native Iceland. This uncertainty certainly gave Inter cold feet.

But a failure to offload Joaquin Correa and Marko Arnautovic also played a major role.

And it was a similar story with defender Buongiorno.

The links between Inter and Buongiorno were logical. The Italian international has the right profile for Inter’s back three defensive system.

But it was Napoli who made the decisive move to sign Buongiorno in a big money deal from Torino.

Tuttosport argue that Inter may well have signed Buongiorno had either Francesco Acerbi or Stefan de Vrij left.

But as it is, the Nerazzurri did not invest.
