No one would argue with if you said Toronto FC are one of the easier opponents to play but New England Revolution's Caleb Porter isn't buying that right now.
Later today, Toronto FC host the New England Revolution for its third consecutive home match across all competitions. Knocked out of the first round of the Canadian Championship by your biggest rivals and sitting nearly dead last in MLS has put Toronto in a rough spot moving forward.
However, upcoming opponents New England expects a trap game, especially based on head coach Caleb Porter's comments earlier in the week. In his words, sometimes the hardest opponents to play are the ones who desperately need a win because they have lost so much.
"It's going to be a big challenge. Sometimes you play a team that's really desperate to win, that's the toughest opponent to play. They're going to want to get their first win at home. We feel like when we played a team like Charlotte, they were going to be a little complacent, with this team, you're not going to get that with Toronto, they're fighting for their lives and so are we."New England Head Coach Caleb Porter
Toronto FC supporters will be hoping that Porter's assumptions are correct. This team needs to show some desperation against New England, or things will continue to get uglier. The club is already seven points out of the last playoff spot in the East, and if they lose on Saturday, they will be a minimum of eight points out of the last spot.
It was a little interesting that Porter described his side as also "fighting for their lives", despite winning their last three matches, including against NYCFC, who are directly ahead of them in the table. Sure, they sit outside the playoff line as well, but they also have four wins to Toronto's sole win on the season.
The two-time MLS Cup champion clearly wants to ensure his team does not get complacent in a game Toronto needs to win after an abysmal last seven days. Porter's side finished below Toronto last season in the Eastern Conference standings, with the Reds sweeping away Revs both at home and away last season, each time winning 1-0.
