What we know so far is that Wirtz jetted into Blackpool in order to hold a secret meeting with Liverpool last week. If he wasn't seriously considering the prospect of joining the club, he would have not done that.

We also know that Bayern Munich are leading the race to sign Wirtz, but they can't afford Bayer Leverkusen's asking fee right now as Ronan Murphy revealed exclusively to Anfield Watch.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are also in the race but it seems at least for now they are prioritising other deals.

Therefore, Liverpool have a chance with Wirtz.

The money is there for the club to spend and there is no player better to spend it on than the Bayer Leverkusen star.

Wirtz is literally going to be one of the best players in the world for the next decade. At 22-years-old, he's averaged 0.77 goal contributions per 90 minutes while playing close to 200 games for Leverkusen already.

Alongside, Frimpong, the two of them have been the two best players for Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso.

This is a duo that has led Leverkusen to the most glorious era in the club's history. They went unbeaten in the Bundesliga last season, qualified for the Champions League again and reached the final of the Europa League.

Signing Frimpong for £30m was already a masterstroke from Hughes but if he could make this a double deal for Liverpool and sign Wirtz as well it would be a massive masterstroke.

Bringing in two players who already have chemistry lining up alongside each other to link-up with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo is a genius move.

Obviously, a lot hinges on whether Liverpool can actually pull the deal off. At this stage, we don't really know where the Reds stand.

But if Hughes brings in both Frimpong and Wirtz, there is no denying that's a masterstroke. The kind of move that will make Liverpool a formidable team for years to come.

If he does this, there is no doubting the Liverpool sporting director's genius. He will be off to the best of starts. And there will likely be even more to come.

For now, we can only wait and see how it all pans out.
