Liverpool have all of a sudden been plunged into a selection crisis up front.

We always knew that Mohamed Salah was going to be out for the duration of the Africa Cup of Nations - but his long-term future is also now shrouded in doubt.

Then there’s the sad case of Alexander Isak. Having struggled for form and fitness in the early part of his Liverpool career - the 26-year-old Sweden forward suffered a broken leg in the process of scoring against Tottenham at the weekend.

And even the dependable Cody Gakpo has been posted absent in recent weeks due to injury - leaving Arne Slot requiring alternative solutions in his attacking setup.

Liverpool wanted Semenyo to cover three positions

Those losses leave Liverpool somewhat short of options across all three attacking positions. And now according to a report in Football Insider sporting director Richard Hughes hadplans to recruit a player who can cover all three positions in January.

It is of course Antoine Semenyo - with the Reds still hoping to beat Manchester City and Manchester United to the Ghanaian’s signature.

Semenyo, 25, signed a new Bournemouth contract over the summer - with it believed to contain a £65m release clause active in January.

City now favourites for Semenyo deal

While City and United are also in the running for the winger - Liverpool are hopeful that their Champions League participation and an immediate place in their XI will be enough to sway a long-term target.

The club value Semenyo’s versatility - with Andoni Iraola using him on both wings this term. And the Reds would also make use of his skills through the centre as they search for solutions in the injury-enforced absence of Isak.

It will be a very difficult operation considering City’s status as favourites to conclude a deal but Liverpool need to bulk up their attacking options in January despite a landmark summer spend.
