Liverpool have confirmed the exit of Scottish sporting director Richard Hughes after around two years in post. The club said in a statement that he has resigned to pursue a new challenge and that the search for his successor is under way.

Liverpool did not disclose the destination. Reports have said he will take the same role at Al-Hilal after the summer transfer window closed on Tuesday.

In a farewell message, Hughes said it had been a source of pride to serve a wonderful and unique institution. He thanked the owners and management for their backing, club staff at all levels, and the players. He also saluted the supporters, pledged to follow the team with affection and wished everyone success this season and beyond.

Hughes was appointed in June 2024, having previously held the same position at Bournemouth. During his spell Liverpool lifted the Premier League for the second time in their history, the 20th top-flight crown overall, and reached the Champions League in both seasons.

Al-Hilal paved the way by reaching agreements with members of his staff, notably Englishman Simon Francis, who oversaw operations during the summer window.
