Liverpool are preparing for big changes at centre-back this summer.

The Anfield club have already spent big on Jeremy Jacquet while Mor Talla Ndiaye is now among Arne Slot’s first-team options. And with Giovanni Leoni set to return from a long-term injury the Premier League champions’ backline will have a fresh look next term.

But adding all these young defenders risks exposing a lack of experience in the ranks. Liverpool have got three senior options currently in the squad and as things stand all three will leave in the next year or so.

Ibrahima Konate could be first out. His contract expires in the summer and no new deal has been announced. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez - meanwhile - are out of contract in 2027.

It would be a surprise to see Van Dijk offered a new deal on £400k per week given he will be 36 by the time his current contract ends.

And Gomez could even be sacrificed this summer with only one year left on his deal as Richard Hughes attempts to claw back some much-needed transfer income.

That means an experienced centre-back option would be an ideal signing for Liverpool this summer.

Liverpool have entered Marcos Senesi race

One player tipped to arrive by a new report in talkSPORT is Marcos Senesi.

The 28-year-old will be leaving Bournemouth this summer after four years on the south coast. The Argentina international - signed by Richard Hughes when he was the Cherries’ technical director - arrived from Feyenoord where he was coached by Arne Slot.

The Premier League champions’ main decision-makers therefore have got intimate working knowledge of the left-footer - who is renowned as one of the best passing centre-backs in the league.

Senesi has reportedly reached an agreement to join Tottenham - should the crisis-hit London club stay up - but the Anfield side are now ready to rival Spurs’ interest.

LFC to hijack Spurs' Senesi deal

“Liverpool are keeping tabs on Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi,” the report reads. “Senesi will leave the Vitality Stadium at the end of the season when his contract expires.

“The Argentina international has already verbally agreed to join Tottenham, assuming they avoid relegation to the Championship. However, Liverpool are believed to be contemplating making a rival offer for the free agent centre-back.

“Much could depend on the future of Ibrahima Konate, who is still to sign a new deal at Anfield. Senesi was signed for Bournemouth by Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes and has played a key part in the Cherries' rise to sixth place in the Premier League.”

Senesi has re-established himself as one of the top defenders around following a difficult term last season. He fell out of favour following injury - with Dean Huijsen taking his place in the lineup under Andoni Iraola.

But with Huijsen sold to Real Madrid - and Iliya Zabarnyi heading to Paris Saint-Germain - Senesi has held the fort for Bournemouth this season.
