Richard Hughes has reportedly started a process to replace Arne Slot. This could be the end.
Arne Slot is under intense pressure at Liverpool after an incredibly disappointing season. The Reds have collapsed after winning the title in 2025, putting up what could end up being the third-worst title defence of the Premier League era.
Only Chelsea in 2016 and Leicester City in 2017 will have put up worst defences. Both sacked their managers.
But because of a quirk in the league table - and the increased number of places - Liverpool are on course to qualify for the UEFA Champions League despite their shocking form. That appears to be enough to keep Slot in a job.
Though, that doesn't mean work isn't being done on potential replacements. Foot Mercato claims that sporting director Richard Hughes is working in the background on potentially hiring Andoni Iraola.
Iraola will leave Bournemouth in the summer after a brilliant spell in charge. It was Hughes who hired him for the Cherries and the report suggests he's now 'discreetly' starting a process on hiring the Spaniard once again.
It does appear that Slot will be given the start of next season, however. The Reds are hiring one of his old Feyenoord coaches, for one, while the Dutchman has openly talked about his involvement in transfer window plans.
But should things go sour next season - and if he's still available - Iraola may well be the one Hughes turns to. He's preparing for that case, certainly.
Bournemouth Historic Campaign and Stats
As of 23 May 2026, Andoni Iraola is preparing to conclude a historic season. The 43-year-old manager has guided the Cherries into the top six, recently securing a European place for the first time in club history following a draw with Manchester City. Nominated for Premier League Manager of the Year, Iraola’s high-intensity system saw the club go on a brilliant 16-match unbeaten streak.
Confirmed Departure and Future
Bournemouth confirmed on 14 April that Iraola will leave this June after rejecting a new contract, ending a stellar three-year tenure. The club has already lined up his successor. Heavily linked with a return to Athletic Club, rumors also suggest Iraola is willing to wait for a potential opening at Liverpool later this year if Arne Slot is dismissed. Chelsea and Crystal Palace have also added him to their shortlists.
