Manchester United’s legendary defender Rio Ferdinand has claimed that his former side would benefit from signing Victor Osimhen this summer instead of Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap.
The Red Devils have been linked to signing a striker this upcoming transfer window due to the paucity of goals they have scored this season, especially in the Premier League.
22 year old Liam Delap has emerged as United’s number one option but they will face major competition from other English and European sides to sign him.
Ruben Amorim’s team have also been linked with the more experienced Victor Osimhen.
Reliable journalist David Ornstein has insisted the Nigerian is not a target for United this summer but the Italian media have suggested that the Red Devils have already agreed to meet his wage demands and a move is back on.
Weighing in on the debate, Rio Ferdinand backed Osimhen while speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents.
The former defender praised Delap’s ability but questioned whether United needed yet another young talent in attack.
“Forget Delap’s ability, potential, whatever you want to say about him. His quality as a player, it’s not about that right now for Man United.”
“I think they need experience in there. Someone who knows how to score and someone that these younger guys can learn off.”
Ferdinand particularly highlighted the case of Rasmus Hojlund who scored his ninth goal of the season at the weekend but only his second of 2025.
“Hojlund needs help. He doesn’t need a competitor. You need someone who can come in who he can go ‘listen take the pressure off me. You’re going to be the main guy. I’m going to learn a little bit in the background and take my chances when they come’.”
With Alejandro Garnacho being only 20 years old, Amad 22 and Joshua Zirkzee 23, there is a distinct lack of experience in the United attack. Adding Delap would certainly bring greater Premier League goalscoring threat but would also be yet another gamble on a young attacker.
