Rio Ferdinand sets ‘realistic’ target for Manchester United’s season | OneFootball

Rio Ferdinand does not believe Manchester United can challenge for the Premier League title and insists the club should be happy with a ‘top-four’ finish.

Manchester United suffered a setback on the opening weekend after losing 2-0 to newly-promoted Hull City.

The Red Devils produced a poor performance at the MKM Stadium, with Michael Carrick’s side given a reality check after last season’s impressive run-in.

United have strengthened with the signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, while Carlos Baleba is nearing a move to Old Trafford from Brighton.

Despite that, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand said his old side remain in transition and believes Champions League qualification should be the target.

He praised defending champions Arsenal after their win over Coventry and questioned whether any side could challenge the Gunners for the league.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “It was what I expected from Arsenal. Solid, hard to play against, shut down the opposition and then fed on some mistakes and punished them.

“They played like champions. I don’t see anyone being able to challenge Arsenal this season. They’re the only team with stability. Everyone else has had big changes.

“Man Utd are still in a transition and a rebuild under a fairly new manager. Man Utd need to set their stall out in a realistic manner.”

He added: “We can’t pretend that Man United should be going for the Premier League title this season. We all want that but you need to be realistic and realise where you are. I think they will finish in the top-four and I would be happy with top-four.”
