Enrique Riquelme cast his vote in the Real Madrid elections then refused to be drawn on José Mourinho, a prominent pledge in Florentino Pérez’s campaign while the Portuguese remains under contract with Benfica.

According to Glorioso 1904, when pressed on the matter, the presidential candidate declined to answer and his aides curtailed further questions.

Earlier this week he voiced admiration for Mourinho’s career and previous spell at the Bernabéu, yet stressed the coach is not part of his plans and does not fit the profile he is seeking.

Riquelme also expressed caution over any move for Mourinho, saying he does not know the details and raising the prospect of contracts that might have to be terminated. He said he would have liked to discuss such issues with Pérez.

Benfica have informed the CMVM that Pérez’s candidacy has shown a firm intention to hire Mourinho if he wins Sunday’s vote, with the operation envisaging payment of the manager’s 15 million euros release clause.

Riquelme said he is progressing with his own project, adding that several professionals have expressed interest in joining his team. He has not revealed his preferred coach, describing the target only as experienced, solid and ready for Real Madrid’s demands.
