According to SuperDepor.com, Juan Román Riquelme was critical after Boca Juniors squeezed into the Copa Sudamericana last 16 on penalties, highlighting the equaliser conceded from a throw-in and a chain of defensive errors.
Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s side travelled to the second leg with a 1-0 lead from the first match, but a defensive mistake ending in a poor intervention by Nicolás Figal allowed O'Higgins to level the series. Boca prevailed 4-3 in the shootout to set up a last-16 meeting with Deportivo Recoleta of Paraguay.
Riquelme said there is plenty to improve and warned that small lapses can prove costly.
He accepted that penalty shootouts carry an element of luck, noting it was on Boca’s side this time, and said the outcome should help the goalkeeper’s confidence.
Asked about Tomás Aranda’s missed chipped penalty, he declined to criticise, saying he is not the coach and that his role as a director is to support the players.
He added that the club are very happy with the new coach and with the squad they are building.
