Riquelme Filipi could earn more minutes under Abel Ferreira at Palmeiras after an eye-catching cameo in the 1-0 win over Chapecoense on 31 May, which kept them top of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
He came on in the second half with Palmeiras a player down. "I prefer to work quietly to earn my chance. The Chapecoense game was very gratifying because I showed what I have been working on for months," he said, per Globo.com.
Riquelme began at Nacional in São Paulo, then Ibrachina, before joining Palmeiras’ academy. A wide attacker known for his one against one ability, he has nearly 60 youth goals and more than 10 assists, yet no senior goal involvement. He has featured in seven first-team matches this year, most early in the Paulista.
He believes his relationship with Abel could help in the second half of the year. "He makes players feel very comfortable to give opinions about the game. He has his convictions, of course, but there is space for us to talk and find the best way".
Protected from European interest by a release clause of 100 million euros, about R$ 600 million, he is focused on Palmeiras. "I feel very calm, I have a contract until 2029. I do not pay much attention to the clause, that is for my dad and agents".
He now trains with the seniors in his final under-20 year. The squad are due back on Sunday night after a World Cup recess.
