River Plate defeated second-division side Platese on Wednesday night to advance to the quarter-finals of the Copa Argentina.
Lucas Pratto and Nacho Scocco’s second-half penalties were the difference as River now await the winner of third-division Sarmiento Resistencia and second-division Atlético de Rafaela.
Despite River’s dominance, the first half was not the most memorable as they only created one real chance direct off their opponent’s goal kick, but Platese goalkeeper Jorge De Olivera was able to come up with a simple save.
River were much more aggressive in the second half and probably should have gone ahead at the hour-mark. Ignacio Fernández stormed onto a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box, but he sent his effort well wide.
The Argentine giants would finally go ahead in the 65th minute through Lucas Pratto’s penalty after Rafael Santos Borré was taken down from behind in the area.
In the 82nd minute, after Platese committed yet another foul in their box, it was time for River’s other top goalscorer, Nacho Scocco, to step up to the spot.
He beautifully placed his penalty into the bottom corner to secure River’s place in the quarter-finals.
