River Plate have unveiled plans to expand the Monumental in Buenos Aires, the club said, with capacity set to pass 100,000.

The stadium currently holds 85,000 and the works will add 16,000 seats.

Club president Stefano Di Carlo called it a historic day in a video presenting the project. Work is due to start in April and is scheduled to last three years. A new roof will cover the currently open-air arena.

The project is estimated to cost more than $100 million, about €83 million.

The world’s largest football stadium is in Pyongyang, with a capacity of 114,000. The Monumental, which hosts Argentina’s home games alongside Boca Juniors’ Bombonera, will edge closer to Barcelona’s Camp Nou at 105,000, the biggest in Europe.
