River Plate are monitoring Nicolás Otamendi’s situation and could move to sign the Benfica captain this summer, with his contract up in June.

Record writes that the Buenos Aires club’s interest is longstanding and that they have monitored the defender for some time, believing they could convince him to return to Argentina as he nears the end of his career.

Otamendi remains an important figure for Benfica, yet his future is open and a switch to Argentine football after his deal expires has been floated.

If they do advance, River would try to persuade the World Cup winner to finish his career at a club he has long admired. There is no agreement in place, the interest persists and the pursuit could gather pace as the season draws to a close.

Otamendi has made 43 appearances for Benfica this season, 24 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 3,809 minutes he has scored three goals. He is valued at around one million euros.
