Despite an astounding statistical advantage in virtually every category, Santos were not able to defeat Uruguayan side River Plate in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana first round clash.

The Brazilians had 69 per cent possession and a 24-13 shot advantage.

River goalkeeper Gastón Olveira was the star of the contest, making seven saves to give the underdogs hope in the second leg.

The return match will take place on 26 February at Vila Belmiro.

Vanderlei made his only save of the match in the 69th minute in spectacular fashion, denying Mauro da Luz the opportunity to give his side an unbelievable win.

Santos left-back Orinho won’t be available for the second leg after he picked up a red card in the 66th minute.
