River have set about finding a successor to Marcelo Gallardo, who will take charge for the last time against Banfield on Thursday.
Eduardo “Chacho” Coudet is viewed as the front-runner. According to SuperDepor.com, he has an emergency meeting with Alavés directors on Wednesday, intensifying talk that he could leave the Spanish club.
As coach of Rosario Central, he pushed the 2015 Primera División title race to the wire, reached the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals and the 2016 Copa Argentina final.
At Racing he lifted the 2019 Superliga and the 2019 Trofeo de Campeones. He has long said managing River is his big ambition, having played there in two spells between 1999 and 2004.
Other candidates include Hernán Crespo and Santiago Solari. Crespo is currently Sao Paulo head coach in Brazil, while Solari serves as Real Madrid’s director of football, and both have long wanted the River job.
Gabriel Milito, Ramón Díaz and Ariel Holan are also being considered.
