Rob Elliot is set to step down at National League side Gateshead after recent talks over the club’s direction stalled, according to Sunderland Echo.

The former Newcastle United and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper returned for a second spell at the International Stadium in January. He helped the Heed move on from a 15-game winless run and avoid relegation.

After several signings, a long-awaited win at FC Halifax Town sparked a sequence of just two defeats in 15. The Tynesiders climbed from 12 points adrift to safety with a home win over Scunthorpe United in the final fortnight.

After the season, he outlined plans for a lively pre-season, targeting revenue-raising fixtures with local clubs and bigger sides while protecting the pitch given Newcastle United’s presence. He said a full pre-season means fewer issues and can help them attack the new campaign.

He is now believed to be on the brink of stepping down after meetings with senior figures failed to agree a path on and off the pitch, prompting him to consider his future.

The former Crawley Town manager is understood to have interest from elsewhere after his impact over the last six months, though that is not thought to be influencing the situation.
