Wrexham hosted Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round at the Racecourse Ground, and a message from co-owner Rob McElhenney after their 2023 friendly underlined the club's ambition, Wales Online reports.
The tie on Saturday evening was the first competitive meeting since Wrexham's 1-0 win over Chelsea in 1982. The sides had most recently met in July 2023 in Chapel Hill, United States, during pre-season.
Before their return to League Two following promotion from the National League, Wrexham faced Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea in front of 50,000 in North Carolina and lost 5-0, with the last three goals arriving in the final 15 minutes.
Despite that defeat, McElhenney thanked Chelsea on X and said he hoped the clubs would meet again in about five years. His optimism aligns with Wrexham's rise, with three successive promotions taking them to the Championship, where they sit sixth, the final play-off spot.
After a difficult start, with only two wins from their first 10 league games this season, Phil Parkinson's side have rallied and are nine points off second with 11 fixtures remaining.
