Olympique de Marseille and head coach Roberto de Zerbi have agreed to part company by mutual consent, the decision coming overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday after the 5-0 Ligue 1 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain.
The club said in a statement that, after consultation among its leadership, it had opted for a change at the head of the first team, describing it as a collective and difficult call in the interests of the run-in. It also thanked De Zerbi for his work, highlighting last season’s second-place finish.
De Zerbi, 46, arrived in the summer of 2024 and delivered a strong league campaign last term, but pressure intensified after Sunday’s humiliation at the Parc des Princes. Fans and local media were unforgiving following the Classique loss.
Marseille are already out of the race for the Champions League, having lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool then 3-0 in Bruges. De Zerbi had been left searching for answers amid the team’s slump.
OM host Strasbourg at the Vélodrome on Saturday at 17:00. They sit fourth, 12 points behind Paris SG, and recently let a 2-0 lead slip to draw 2-2 at Paris FC late January.
Direct Champions League qualification remains attainable and the Coupe de France, last won in 1989, is still a live objective. Despite additions such as world champion Benjamin Pavard, whose spell has soured, along with Igor Paixao and Nayef Aguerd, OM have four points fewer than at this stage last season. A planned three-year cycle with De Zerbi had met scepticism despite his strong reputation from Sassuolo, Shakhtar Donetsk and Brighton, and previous links to Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
