Roberto De Zerbi has left his role as Marseille head coach by mutual consent, ending an 18-month spell in charge.

The club said in a statement on Wednesday that a meeting involving owner Frank McCourt, president Pablo Longoria, sporting director Medhi Benatia and De Zerbi agreed a managerial change, describing it as a difficult, collective choice after reflection.

Marseille thanked the Italian for his work and professionalism. He led the team to second place in 2024/25, returning the club to the Champions League for the first time since 2022.

Form has been inconsistent since the turn of the year, and Brugge eliminated them from the Champions League in January amid a Ligue 1 downturn.

De Zerbi was close to leaving then but chose to continue with Marseille still chasing Champions League qualification and in the Coupe de France quarter-finals. A 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain proved decisive, with talks over his exit beginning in the days that followed.
