Fans will line the streets of N17 ahead of relegation decider

Roberto De Zerbi has said it would be an honour for Tottenham’s supporters to welcome the team coach ahead of their relegation decider at home to Everton.

De Zerbi has decided that Spurs’ squad should stay together to prepare for arguably the biggest game in the club’s history, before travelling to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The decision marks a change in protocol from De Zerbi’s first home game in charge, when Spurs’ players travelled separately and arrived four hours ahead of kick-off.

But while De Zerbi admits it would be a “great thing for the players” if supporters lined the streets to welcome the team coach, he insists that any decision would not add any pressure to what is expected to be a tense atmosphere.

“No, no, it was my decision because I thought to stay together the day before, in the morning of the game, not because of the fans,” De Zerbi said in his pre-match press conference.

Tottenham fans will rally outside the stadium on the final day of the campaign

“If the fans show their love to the players, it is not pressure, it is an honour, it is a great thing for the players.

“It is not a pressure, it is a good thing, it is a positive thing for us.”

Spurs have won just twice at home in the league this season, and squandered the opportunity to put distance between themselves and the relegation zone last Monday when they drew 1-1 with Leeds.

De Zerbi previously described the atmosphere inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as “hot” in an attempt to inspire his players ahead of the Leeds game.

Heat, though, can be as overwhelming as it can be rehabilitating, and De Zerbi admits Spurs have to start on the front foot if they are to get the fans on side on a pivotal afternoon in the club’s history.

“We have to be good, to start the game with energy, with spirit and after 10/15 minutes, if we are playing well, the fans come inside of the pitch. We have to be good to deserve their support, like we did against Brighton or part of the game against Leeds at home.”
