Roberto De Zerbi has issued a public response following criticism from Tottenham Hotspur supporters over his past defence of Mason Greenwood during their time together at Olympique de Marseille.
The Italian, appointed by Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week, faced opposition from several fan groups prior to his arrival in north London. Concerns centred on his vocal support of Greenwood, whom he coached for 18 months in Ligue 1.
In a video published on Thursday via the club’s official channels, De Zerbi sought to clarify his position.
“I am sorry if I offended anyone’s feelings with this subject matter,” he said. “I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly.”
The 46-year-old emphasised that his personal values have consistently aligned with defending vulnerable individuals, adding that he hoped supporters would come to better understand his stance over time.
“I’ve always stood on the side of those most at risk… I’m not someone who makes compromises to win more games or titles,” he continued. “I have a daughter and I’m very sensitive to these things, I always have been…I didn’t mean to take a stance”.De Zerbi worked closely with Greenwood following the forward’s move to Marseille in the summer of 2024, shortly after the Italian’s own appointment at the club. During his tenure, the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager repeatedly defended Greenwood both as a player and as a person, drawing scrutiny upon his return to England.
Greenwood’s arrival in France came after a loan spell with Getafe CF and the discontinuation of criminal charges against him in February 2023. The Crown Prosecution Service cited the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material as factors in its decision, stating there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. Greenwood has denied all allegations.
Ahead of De Zerbi’s appointment, three officially recognised Tottenham supporter groups urged the club not to pursue the Italian. Following confirmation of his arrival on March 31, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust issued a statement condemning the decision.
De Zerbi replaces Igor Tudor in the Spurs dugout, with the club currently sitting 17th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone. The former Marseille coach departed the Ligue 1 side in February after less than two years in charge. GFFN | George Boxall
