Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi, formerly of Marseille, said on the club’s social channels that Premier League survival stirred stronger emotions than lifting a trophy.

De Zerbi arrived on 31 March. Over seven Premier League matches he suffered two defeats and claimed three wins, including a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, who finished fourth and were recent Europa League winners. Spurs secured safety on the final day with a two-point cushion over West Ham, who were relegated in 18th.

The 46-year-old described the escape as the most beautiful moment of his football life, adding that staying up feels stronger than winning a league title and that the emotion is more intense.

He had been asked to reflect on his emotions in the aftermath of avoiding the drop.

His remarks came only days after Spurs confirmed their top-flight status.
