Olympique de Marseille’s form has fluctuated so far this season. They began the season in style, battering Stade Brestois 5-1 away on the opening day. However, they were more wasteful the week after, being held to a draw at home to Stade de Reims.
A 3-2 win over fierce rivals Olympique Lyonnais, despite playing with 10 men from the fifth minute was a particular high point for Marseille. However, Roberto De Zerbi sought to calm talk of a title challenge post-match, stating that OM were still building and highlighting the headstart that AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain already have.
OM showed why De Zerbi was cautious just one week later, losing 1-0 away to RC Strasbourg Alsace. Still, Les Phocéens sit third in Ligue 1 and are just three points off joint league leaders PSG and Monaco. Consistency is key and that is what De Zerbi has called for in a statement that also sends out a warning to his players.
“If the players alternate between good and bad performances, it means that they aren’t at the level to play for OM,” said the former Brighton and Hove Albion manager. All of his players therefore have a point to prove when they take on SCO Angers on Friday evening.
