The turning point of Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille reign came with a Champions League collapse, as defeat at Club Brugge, combined with results elsewhere, dumped OM out of the competition.
OM had travelled to Belgium with their fate firmly in their hands and a play-off place within reach. Only a heavy defeat, alongside unfavourable results elsewhere, would have eliminated them, which is what happened as Anatoliy Trubin excelled for Benfica against Real Madrid and Marseille lost 3-0. L’Équipe reports De Zerbi told the dressing room after the Trophée des Champions penalties loss to Paris Saint-Germain that, on that showing, he was sure they could reach the Champions League semi-finals.
The fallout was swift, with Marseille throwing away a two-goal lead at Paris FC just days later.
Beating Stade Rennais in the Coupe de France brought brief respite.
A record 5-0 defeat in Sunday’s Le Classique sealed De Zerbi’s fate, and he later left by mutual consent.
