Roberto Firmino said no to Real Madrid

Roberto Firmino has never truly slipped off the radar of European football’s elite, even after his departure from Liverpool. Now playing for Al-Sadd following a brief stint at Al-Ahli, the Brazilian international has confirmed that he was indeed courted by Real Madrid before signing in Saudi Arabia. It’s a story that stayed behind the scenes for a long time, but now the striker has decided to tell it in detail.

Speaking to TNT Sports Brasil, Firmino admitted that Los Merengues considered recruiting him in 2023, as his contract with the Reds was coming to an end.

"Of course there was, to be honest, yes there was interest," he explained.

"My agency told me. And yes, it was recently, when the offer from Saudi Arabia came up... At the time, there was real interest from Madrid. They asked me to wait because they were monitoring other players. I wasn’t the first or second option, so I would have had to wait a long time. It’s not that I’m impatient, but there was waiting involved."

While the trail cooled off, the English press revealed that Madrid considered him again last summer as a potential replacement for Joselu. But internal circumstances halted any progress: with Gonzalo García’s breakthrough and Endrick’s impending arrival, Los Blancos no longer had room for another creative number nine.

Yet, Real Madrid has never hidden its admiration for Firmino’s profile, especially his unique ability to link up play and bring fluidity to attacks. It’s a rare quality that Madrid’s management observed for a long time… before finally closing the chapter.
