Italy’s federation is back to square one in its coaching search after Andrea Pirlo was ruled out and Paolo Maldini and Leonardo resigned.

According to L'Équipe, the FIGC could now turn to Roberto Mancini or Antonio Conte.

The pair had been officially appointed technical director and special adviser for an eight to 10-year project that has lasted only 15 days.

Their resignations were submitted late on Monday.

The saga is verging on the grotesque as the federation grapples with turmoil.
