As reported by Superdeporte, Roberto Martínez publicly defended Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal began the 2026 World Cup with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, a result that reopened debate over the captain’s role.

Portugal started with authority through an early João Neves strike. Yoane Wissa levelled before the interval, securing a landmark point for the African side.

Ronaldo endured one of his quietest nights for Portugal. At 41, he struggled to influence play and finished with zero goals, shots on target, completed dribbles, key passes, fouls won or successful crosses.

The discussion around his place has persisted since Qatar 2022, when he even lost his starting spot during the tournament. Yet under Martínez he has also produced decisive moments, including the goal that delivered Portugal the UEFA Nations League final.

Martínez was firm afterwards, saying it made no sense to remove Ronaldo while Portugal were chasing a winner, and underlined his faith in the forward’s experience, leadership and finishing. He added that Portugal’s main issue was collective, accepting they lost intensity after going ahead and allowed DR Congo to grow into the match.

The draw leaves Portugal needing a sharper performance in their remaining group games. Their qualification prospects are intact, but questions linger over their competitive level.
