The club said in a statement on Saturday that owner and president Rocco Commisso has died aged 76 after a long period of treatment.

He had led the Serie A club since 2019 and was an American businessman of Italian origin.

Commisso founded Mediacom, serving as chairman and chief executive. The telecommunications company served more than three million homes and businesses across 22 states.

He became owner of the New York Cosmos in 2017, sold the club this summer, then bought Fiorentina in 2019.

Under his tenure, the Viola reached three finals and lost them, the Coppa Italia in 2023 and the Conference League in 2023 and 2024.

The team are struggling this season and currently sit 18th in Serie A.
