Rodri joins illustrious list of greats after World Cup win | OneFootball

City midfielder Rodri has become just the 11th man in football history to win the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Ballon d’Or.

The Spain captain completed the historic treble after leading his nation to a 1-0 extra time win over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final.

Former City forward Ferran Torres was La Roja’s hero, firing home Nico Williams’ knockdown to earn the Spanish their second-ever World Cup crown.

Rodri was central to Spain’s success, completing more passes, covering more distance and have more player involvements (distinct touches or participations) than any other player at this summer’s tournament.

Two years ago, the midfielder became the first City player to win the Ballon d’Or on the back of helping the Blues to a record fourth successive Premier League title and helping Spain win Euro 2024.

That followed a remarkable 2022/23 campaign, where Rodri scored the winning goal in the Champions League final as City beat Inter 1-0 in Istanbul to be crowned champions of Europe and complete the Treble.

Those successes now place the midfielder alongside just ten other men’s players to have won all three honours.

Sir Bobby Charlton was the first to complete the set, with German duo Gerd Muller and Franz Beckenbauer as well as Italy’s 1982 World Cup hero Paolo Rossi the other players to make the list in the 20th century.

Zinedine Zidane and Rivaldo joined them in 2002 and 2003 respectively, with the latter’s Brazil team-mates Ronaldinho and Kaka following in 2006 and 2007.

Fast forward 15 years and Lionel Messi would become the ninth inductee after Argentina’s World Cup triumph over France, with Les Bleus’ Ousmane Dembele making it ten in 2025.

But now, Rodri joins that truly remarkable list after Spain’s World Cup triumph.
