According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Rodrigo Hernández, speaking at Spain’s Media Day as one of the captains alongside Unai Simón and Mikel Oyarzabal, played down talk linking him to Real Madrid after comments by presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme. He said he is focused on leading the national team and that any decision would be considered after the World Cup.

Riquelme, at an event in Málaga on Saturday, said that if he became Real Madrid president, a player like Rodri would play for the club, and he lamented Madrid having no players in Spain’s squad.

He also promised updates on his sporting structure in the coming days, and trailed at least two marquee signings this week, including a foreign world star to be revealed on Wednesday.

Rodri has one year left on his Manchester City contract. Pep Guardiola’s departure has prompted an exodus that includes Bernardo Silva, and in England it is widely assumed the midfielder will also leave, though City have made a renewal offer.

The report adds that, although Riquelme has spoken publicly, Madrid’s hierarchy have long targeted Rodri to bolster midfield, with the plan said to be on track. It further claims he would confirm a move once a fee is agreed with City, becoming a headline signing for José Mourinho in his second spell at the Bernabéu.
