Rodri has revealed details of his private conversation with Jose Mourinho after Real Madrid attempted to beat Barcelona to the blockbuster signing during the summer transfer window.
The Spanish World Cup winner was a serious target for Real Madrid after deciding his time at Manchester City had come to an end.
Barcelona eventually won the race, with Rodri choosing the Catalan club’s sporting project ahead of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Mourinho personally entered the picture, calling Rodri as Real Madrid sought to convince the midfielder.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona signing explained what happened during that conversation and how he responded after making his decision.

Rodri was asked about Mourinho publicly confirming that the pair had spoken during the transfer process.
“Well, I don’t think it’s really his place to reveal a private conversation, but he clearly expressed his desire for me to join and what I could bring to the team. He treated me very well.
“When I made my decision, I also rang him to thank him for his interest and the way he’d treated me. I think he’s a brilliant manager.
“He’s already proved that wherever he’s been during his great spells, and Real Madrid are going to be a tough opponent in this La Liga season,” he explained.

Rodri had previously explained that his choice was driven by where he believed he could win and continue developing, rather than choosing between two famous clubs.
The midfielder was also questioned about another factor surrounding Real Madrid’s pursuit: his links with presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme.
Rodri made clear that he knew little about the matter and did not believe it played a role in his thinking.
“Honestly, I was completely unaware of all this because it happened – if I remember correctly – during the World Cup, and I was focused on helping my national team achieve what is, to this day, the most important milestone I’ve ever reached,” he concluded.
