City midfielder and Spain captain Rodri has won the World Cup following his nation’s 1-0 win over Argentina.

An extra time winner from former City man Ferran Torres was enough to deliver Spain a deserved triumph over the reigning champions in New Jersey.

La Roja’s victory also means Rodri joins an illustrious list alongside ten other male players to have won the World Cup, Champions League and Ballon d’Or.

It’s only the second time Spain have won the World Cup and comes 16 years after their first triumph back in 2010.

Already one of only three nations to hold the World and European title at the same time, Rodri and co. now join only Brazil and Argentina in history to have simultaneously held a continental and world title on more than one occasion.

Coming into the tournament as defending European champions, La Roja were tipped by many to go the distance this summer and they – as well as Rodri – have backed up that faith in style.

They recovered from a surprise goalless draw with Cape Verde in their opening fixture to top Group H, beating Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to reach the knockout stages.

A 3-0 win over Austria would follow in the Round of 32, before dramatic late victories over Portugal and Belgium set up a mouthwatering semi-final tie with France.

Against perhaps the standout attacking team at the World Cup, Rodri delivered a masterclass, winning more duels (11) than the rest of the French midfield combined (7) to help deliver a 2-0 victory.

And now he’s helped Luis de la Fuente’s side deliver on the biggest stage following their triumph over holders Argentina.

Conceding just once en route to the final and not trailing at any point in the entire competition, Rodri was a central cog in the Spanish machine.

And he once again helped Spain eventually deliver in the final, as they claimed football’s ultimate prize for the second time in their history.
