If a recent report from the Sheffield Star is believed to be true, Rangers boss Danny Rohl is eyeing a reunion with Yan Valery. But they are not alone in the hunt, with Championship duo Wrexham and Millwall also keeping close tabs on the Sheffield Wednesday defender.
Born in France, the 26-year-old Tunisia international progressed through the academy ranks of AS Outre-Mer du Bois l’Abbé, Champigny FC 94 and Rennes before plying his trade in England to join Southampton’s youth set-up. Despite frequently featuring as a teenager, his minutes decreased over time, leading to a return to France in favour of a transfer to Angers in the summer of 2022.
Valery was a regular for Le SCO, who failed to retain their top-flight status in 2023. However, he helped them gain an immediate promotion before being lured by the Owls for a modest €474k. Rohl, who worked with him at Southampton, brought him to Hillsborough ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Although he deployed him in his preferred right-back or right wing-back role, the Tunisian has been converted into a midfielder by Henrik Pedersen. Having also slotted in as a centre-half under both managers, his flexibility would bolster the Gers if the German gaffer uses his connections and contacts to tie him down north of the border.

Rangers are leaving no stone unturned to fix the mistakes made in the summer window. The 49ers are backing the boss, who has not only revived their campaign but also reinstated them in the title race alongside Celtic and Hearts.
While they have roped in Tuur Rommens, Tochi Chukwuani, and Andreas Skov Olsen, players who are surplus to requirements are also being moved out, either on loan or permanent exit. Chukwuani would inject quality and composure in the centre of the pitch.
Yet they require further reinforcements, having sanctioned Lyall Cameron’s departure. Kieran Dowell and Joe Rothwell are expected to return to the English Championship, and the injuries to Connor Barron and Bailey Rice leave them with Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande as the only alternatives deep down the midfield.
Rangers have Max Aarons to challenge and cover skipper James Tavernier as the right fullback. Versatile Dujon Sterling has also shown his expertise across the backline as well as in the middle of the park. Nevertheless, his persistent injury problems highlight the need for another utility star at Ibrox.
Sheffield Wednesday are heading towards a demotion to League One after an 18-point deduction for multiple breaches. They are stuck at rock bottom with -7 points, and a few exits could be a blessing in disguise. The club entered administration in October. And the monetary profit from player sales might help them deal with financial losses in the coming days.
