Amid a turbulent start to the year for Vasco, Johan Rojas has emerged as a bright spot. The December signing shone as Vasco advanced past Volta Redonda, pressing his case for a starting role.
According to Globo.com, the Colombian came on at half-time, was cheered as he warmed up in São Januário, and earned more acclaim after an influential second half.
In 45 minutes he had nine shots, completed 32 passes and won three fouls. He was close to scoring with a first-time strike from a Gómez cross, kept out by a save.
Rojas said the upturn owed much to self-belief, adding Fernando Diniz had protected the group and given them confidence, which he felt showed after the break.
He thanked supporters for strong backing since his arrival, admitting he had not expected such warmth. He said the team hope to meet their objectives to keep fans happy.
While Rojas was applauded, Coutinho was booed and abused at half-time. The Colombian stressed he is not competing with the captain, calling Coutinho a reference point he admires and a team-mate who encourages him.
Rojas had already impressed against Boavista with two assists. Diniz said he entered well again, has started before, is gaining condition after a month at the club and fits his ideas, with good set pieces. He added Rojas perhaps produced the most and that the team’s mood shifted.
Vasco return next weekend, awaiting their Campeonato Carioca semi-final opponent from Fluminense or Bangu.
