Sport Bild reports that Borussia Mönchengladbach director of sport Roland Virkus is to have his contract at the club extended.

Virkus’ current deal expires in the summer and the supervisory board, which contains legendary club midfielder and now president Rainer Bonhof, is happy with Virkus’ work when it comes to transfers and squad planning. Talks over a new contract are said to begin in January.

Virkus took over from Max Eberl in 2022 and he was dropped into a difficult situation which ended up with Adi Hütter getting sacked and being replaced by Daniel Farke, who was also sacked and then replace by Gerardo Seoane. While on the contract front, Gladbach have had to sell Yann Sommer, Breel Embolo and Manu Koné for cheaper than they would have liked while Marcus Thuram and Ramy Bensebaini also left on free transfers.

However, there has now begun to be an upturn in his work. The summer signings of Kevin Stöger and Tim Kleindienst have proven to be coups while other signings of Virkus’ tenure Robin Hack, Ko Itakura and Franck Honorat have also been successful.

Like all clubs, there have also been some teething problems with the signings of Tomas Cvancara, Nathan Ngoumou and in hindsight Jonas Omlin as well, the Swiss keeper has proven to be very injury-prone.

With Gladbach currently occupying a European spot, they have the chance to get back to where they belong and Virkus must get it right to make sure Gladbach does not enter the cycle that they have been in for the past four years.
