Speaking after the game, Leverkusen’s managing director for sport said it was a pleasure to see him back, and highlighted the home fans applauding a former player as proof of Havertz’s strong bond with Bayer 04.

He noted that Leverkusen rarely re-sign long-standing favourites late in their careers, yet hinted Havertz might be an exception, admitting he is liable to give in where the forward is concerned, and that Havertz knows it.

For now, a switch is currently out of the question, with the 26-year-old reportedly earning around 0 million in the Premier League, but Rolfes did not close the door entirely. He added that whenever they speak he is already chipping away, a line delivered with a wink and a chuckle.
