Roma tried until the end to tweak their squad but were unable to complete any deal on deadline day. The way the final weeks of the window were handled generated some tensions between Gian Piero Gasperini and director Frederic Massara, La Repubblica informs.
The official even threatened to resign if the situation continued to escalate. It’ll be up to consultant Claudio Ranieri to mend fences and maintain the unity behind the scenes.
The Giallorossi negotiated a swap between Artem Dovbyk and Santiago Gimenez at length with Milan. However, the latter ultimately decided to stay at San Siro, not budging from his stance. The capital club would have signed Breel Embolo had they sent the Ukrainian striker elsewhere. The Swiss international moved to Rennes for €13M.
As far as the winger is concerned, Roma chased after Tyrique George until Monday, but they deemed him too expensive. Chelsea ultimately kept him despite a strong bid from Fulham. Instead, Jadon Sancho headed to Aston Villa on a simple loan.
The Giallorossi pursued Benjamin Dominguez but were unable to come to terms with Bologna. Had they signed another attacker, they would have sent Tommaso Baldanzi to Hellas Verona and acquired Matteo Pessina from Monza.
Things would look a lot better if Leon Bailly hadn’t gotten seriously hurt right away, and they hadn’t wasted so much time on Sancho. Dominguez would have been a nice compromise between potential and immediate impact, but Bologna are hard-nosed bargainers. It won’t be a major problem if Paulo Dybala stays healthy. The trade with Milan wouldn’t have moved the needle much, but it would have spared the two clubs some awkwardness, as they clearly don’t rate their own forward very highly.
