After a challenging stretch, Evan Ferguson had a potential breakout performance midweek against Celtic Glasgow in the UEFA Europa League, scoring a brace and powering Roma to a key victory.

The youngster had a good start, but then fell out of favor following an ankle injury. The coach didn’t reintroduce him right away after he got healthy, even though Artem Dovbyk and Paulo Dybala were on the mend. Tommaso Baldanzi got some run out of position over him. Gian Piero Gasperini had some choice words for the 21-year-old at times.

Roma have been tipped to send Ferguson back to Brighton early to pave the way for an addition. In reality, such a process has yet to start, Fabrizio Romano informs (via SOSFanta). The Giallorossi don’t have a clause to do so. They would have to negotiate with the Seagulls. They paid €3M for the temporary spell and are also contributing to the wages.

The capital club has been attached to several marksmen, most frequently Joshua Zirkzee, but doesn’t appear particularly close to any of them.

Our Take on Roma and Ferguson

He’d have the traits to do well in Gasperini’s system, but the gaffer likes players who are in peak shape, have great stamina, and are engaged and active all the time. That’s not always been the case for him and Dovbyk. They can’t carry three center-forwards when they use just one or even zero. One would have to go if they found a way to sign somebody they like better. Ending a loan is a lot easier than pulling off a complex sale. If it’s Zirkzee or bust for them, they’ll have to wait for the second half of January, which will also inform the other choice.
