Roma completed their first Serie A double over eternal rivals Lazio with a pivotal 2-0 win in Sunday’s Derby della Capitale. As a result, the Giallorossi head into the final day of the season in the top four, boasting a two-point lead over Como and Juventus.
Sitting level on points with fourth-placed Milan, Roma knew they had to claim bragging rights in the capital to take the Champions League battle to the final day. However, despite three of the last four league meetings between the sides, it was never going to be a simple task.
Gian Piero Gasperini had to wait until the 40th minute for the opening goal, with Gianluca Mancini heading home a delightful corner-kick delivery from Niccolo Pisilli to break the deadlock. The long-serving defender met Paulo Dybala’s cross midway through the second half to double Roma’s lead, setting the tone for another derby win.
Even though both sides entered the final 20 minutes of play down a man, Lazio couldn’t spring a comeback. Without a further ado, let’s look at our Roma ratings.
Mile Svilar (7/10) – Barely called into action, yet one of the most highly rated Serie A goalkeepers maintained focus throughout the game, making two decent saves to keep another clean sheet.
Mario Hermoso (7/10) – Lost his temper toward the end of the first half, picking up a needless booking. However, held up his end of the bargain against Matteo Cancellieri.
Evan Ndicka (6/10) – It was another reassuring performance from the Ivorian center-back, who kept Boulaye Dia in his back pocket, completely neutralizing the Biancocelesti star before suffering an injury late in the first half.
Gianluca Mancini (9/10) – In addition to another flawless defensive display, the Roma stalwart scored two match-deciding headers to propel his side to a crucial victory.
Wesley Franca (4/10) – Let the size of the occasion get the better of him in the 70th minute, entering a heated altercation with Nicolo Rovela, which saw both players sent off.
Neil En Aynaoui (6/10) – Had a limited impact in the build-up, but made up for a lack of creativity with a tireless work rate, providing additional cover to his backline.
Bryan Cristante (7/10) – His calmness on the ball and ability to retain possession in tight spaces often gave Roma a much-needed breathing space after moving a goal up.
Zeki Celik (6/10) – Despite lacking impact in the final third, the Turkish wingback never put his foot wrong in defense, making light work of Tijjani Noslin.
Niccolo Pisilli (8/10) – Today’s match came as a further confirmation of the youngster’s growing importance to Gasperini’s system. That first-half assist was a cherry on top.
Paulo Dybala (7/10) – It was a proper Derby della Capitale farewell for La Joya, who set up Mancini for the ‘killing blow with a perfectly-taken corner kick.
Donyell Malen (6/10) – Couldn’t add to his impressive scoring tally, but the Aston Villa loanee nearly scored a spectacular bicycle kick in the second half, only for Edoardo Motta to deny him with a superb save.
Devyne Rensch 6/10
Stephan El Shaarawy 6/10
