Olympique de Marseille’s Mason Greenwood (24) is reported to have reached an agreement with Fenerbahçe SK regarding his transfer to the Turkish club, according to L’Équipe.
Dreamed up by Fenerbahçe presidential candidate Hakan Safi, the Englishman saw his main suitor defeated at the polls by Aziz Yildirim. However, this turn of events has ultimately had no bearing on the Istanbul club’s ambitions, as they still wish to bring the forward to the shores of the Bosphorus. Better still, the new management’s offer is said to satisfy Greenwood. But there is a ‘but’ – and not a minor one at that.
To secure the services of the former Manchester United player, Fenerbahçe are said to be prepared to offer €30 million, plus bonuses. In other words, an amount far below the minimum €50 million demanded by Marseille, who would also have to pay 40 per cent of the transfer fee to the Red Devils.
Other clubs, such as AS Roma, Atlético Madrid and Al-Hilal, are also interested in the player who scored 26 goals and provided 11 assists last season, but will only be able to make a move once they have trimmed down their squads. However, the Marseille board will take a hard line with them too, despite the austerity measures announced in response to the club’s worrying financial situation.
